Shiogama Jinja, located in Miyagi Prefecture, is an incredibly significant Shinto shrine, revered as one of the oldest and most important in the entire Tohoku region. Perched on a hill overlooking Matsushima Bay, it has been worshipped for centuries as the guardian deity of seafarers and fishermen, and is also associated with safe childbirth and the ancient art of salt-making, from which the city of Shiogama derives its name. The shrine complex, parts of which date back to 1704 and are designated Important Cultural Properties, offers a serene atmosphere with its impressive 202-step stone stairway, ancient trees, and stunning cherry blossoms, including the unique "Shiogama-zakura" variety.
