The Fuji Five Lakes (富士五湖, Fujigoko) is a collective name for five lakes located at the northern base of Mount Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. These lakes were formed by volcanic eruptions that dammed rivers flowing down Mount Fuji.
Lake Kawaguchi, the most popular of the Fuji Five Lakes, is a captivating sight. This lake offers a picture-perfect reflection of Mount Fuji in its clear waters, making it a favorite spot for photographers and sightseers alike. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities around the lake, including boating, hiking, and cycling, or simply relax and take in the stunning scenery.
Nestled amidst the beauty of Mount Fuji, Lake Yamanakako is the largest of the Fuji Five Lakes. This scenic spot boasts breathtaking views of Mount Fuji, particularly stunning when reflected on the lake's surface. Visitors can enjoy a variety of recreational activities here, including boating, fishing, and relaxing on the shores.
Saiko, also sometimes called Western Lake, is the least crowded of the Fuji Five Lakes and offers a more peaceful view of Mount Fuji. It's a great place to go for a hike or to simply relax and enjoy the nature. The surface elevation of 900 meters (3,000 ft) is the same as for Lake Motosu and Lake Shōji, confirming that these three lakes were originally a single lake, which was divided by an enormous lava flow from Mount Fuji during an eruption from 864 to 868 AD. The remnants of the lava flow are now under the Aokigahara Jukai Forest, and there is evidence to indicate that these three lakes remain connected by underground waterways.
The smallest of the Fuji Five Lakes is Lake Shōji. Here, visitors can trade the crowds for a tranquil escape amidst nature. Nestled near Aokigahara Forest, the lake offers opportunities for hiking, camping, and soaking up the beauty of Mount Fuji from a unique perspective.
The westernmost of the Fuji Five Lakes, Lake Motosu is known for its pristine waters and beautiful reflection of Mount Fuji. The iconic image of Mount Fuji featured on the back of the 1,000 yen bill was taken here. The shores are barely developed except for a few campgrounds. Outdoor activities and water sports such as windsurfing, boating and fishing are popular around the lake.
Lake Ashi, also known as Hakone Lake, is a scenic crater lake located in the Hakone caldera. It's known for its picturesque views of Mount Fuji, especially on clear days . Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities here, such as riding the Hakone Ropeway, visiting the Owakudani Valley known for its geothermal activity, or relaxing in a natural hot spring while surrounded by stunning scenery.
Arakura Sengen Park is a block park located near Lake Kawaguchiko, offering a panoramic view of Mount Fuji. The park itself is quite small, but its iconic sight is the five-storied pagoda, perfectly positioned to create stunning photos with Mount Fuji as the backdrop, especially during cherry blossom season.
Nestled near Mount Fuji, Oshino Hakkai is a collection of eight crystal-clear ponds fed by snowmelt filtering through volcanic rock. This picturesque area offers not only stunning views of Mount Fuji, but also a glimpse into Japanese tradition with thatched-roof farmhouses and local delicacies.
Nestled near Mount Fuji, Shiraito Falls offers a contrasting yet complementary sight. Cascading down a 20-meter cliff in numerous thin streams, it resembles strands of white silk, justifying its name (Shiraito translates to "white thread"). This picturesque waterfall is a refreshing stop for those exploring the majestic mountain and surrounding Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.
As you explore further, discover the vastness of Lake Yamanakako, the volcanic crater lake of Ashi, and the historical charm of Arakura Sengen Park with its iconic pagoda. Finally, immerse yourself in the tranquility of Oshino Hakkai's eight crystal-clear ponds and the cascading beauty of Shiraito Falls. The Five Fuji Lakes paint a magnificent tapestry around Mount Fuji, waiting to be explored.
