Fugaku, Japan’s fastest supercomputer (currently the world's 4th fastest after 3 supercomputers from the US), went virtual on AWS. The researchers behind Fugaku, are trying to make the supercomputer just as accessible on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud.

"That’s the ideal representation for Fugaku: the easiest supercomputer to use in the world. Fugaku will make the innovation cycle much faster,” said Dr. Matsuoka.

In 2022, Renesas Electronics' purchase of Australian software firm Altium, was valued at 9.1 billion Australian dollars (roughly ¥902 billion).

2020

2019

Yahoo Japan (SoftBank) and Naver formed a joint-venture, Z holdings and acquired Line through a merger in November 2019 (estimated as ~ USD 30-35 billion)

2018

Takeda Pharmaceutical acquired Shire plc for USD $77 billion.

Corporate Japan splashed out nearly $180bn on 621 outbound deals so far this year (2018), compared with 685 deals with a total value of almost $80bn for the whole of 2017, according to financial data provider Dealogic. The highest recorded value of overseas deals for the last 23 years was in 2012, when it hit more than $110bn.

Hitachi added another $6.4bn to Japan’s tally of deals on Monday after it bought an 80.1% stake in the power grids division of its Swiss-Swedish rival ABB.

2017

SoftBank acquired Boston Dynamics in 2017 for an undisclosed amount, which sold to Hyundai in 2020, for $1.1 billion.

2016

SoftBank bought ARM for around $32 billion in cash in July 2016.

2015

Itochu Corporation's (alongside Thai partner Charoen Pokphand Group) purchase of a subsidiary of CITIC (China's largest state-owned enterprise) for ¥1.2 trillion (roughly $10.6 billion). This deal also holds the title of the largest ever investment made by a Japanese company in China.

Suntory Holdings Acquired Beam in $16 Billion Transaction.

2013

Japan's Softbank buys Sprint in $20 billion deal. Sprint later merged with T-Mobile US.

2012

All in all, Japanese companies spent nearly $84 billion in outbound M&A in 2012 in over 655 deals.

2011

The total spent by Japanese companies on acquisitons was $68 billion in 2011.

2010
